Selecting the right carpet for your home can seem challenging, as it’s a long-term decorating investment and not something we purchase often. Not to mention the endless number of options and samples can be intimidating.
Today's carpets are available in a wide range of fibre types, textures, patterns, weights, densities and backings. Before making your carpet purchase we recommend that you discuss your carpet needs and expectations with your flooring retailer. In particular, it's important to know the performance characteristics of each carpet construction and fibre, including inherent stain resistance properties or additional after-treatments that are added to help protect your carpet against stains and soils.
The quality and performance of your carpet is also due to its construction. It is important to know how the fibres are twisted and heat set as well as the density of the yarn tufts. The number of times a carpet tuft is twisted determines durability- tightly twisted fibres for example perform well in high traffic areas. Heat setting is the process that sets the twists either by heat or steam enabling prolonged resilience over time and the closer together the strands are at the base of the carpet, the more dense the carpet. This will affect how the carpet looks and performs. Superior carpet performance is a function of the right combination of fibre, construction and style.
